Now almost 100 years old, Molteni&C is known for its luxury furniture and custom kitchen and wardrobe systems, working with designers like Gio Ponti, Yabu Pushelberg and Patricia Urquiola. Molteni&C has just released a new kitchen and wardrobe system designed by Vincent Van Duysen, previewed at Vancouver’s Livingspace Interiors.

Postmedia sat down with the brands’ area manager Federico Claudio Podestà, to hear all about the collection.

This latest collection shows a move towards lighter colours and a heavy focus on practicality. This move from darker colours to lighter shades in the kitchen is really to create a warmer environment, says Podestà.

People live in their kitchens, he says. They welcome friends and family there. So it needs to be a lovely, warm place in the home.

In this design, Van Duysen chose slats of wood for the kitchen island to welcome in light and, from a practical perspective, allow people to see what’s in the cupboards.

“Whenever we start a project, we start with the kitchen and build around them. They need to be as practical as possible,” he says.

Designing for the future

Molteni&C is future-focused regarding design, says Podestà. It’s a very involved process, which involves collecting as much feedback as possible from its global dealers and turning these into actual products.

He says the smallest request from someone can turn into a new product. Every closet and kitchen design is treated as an individual project, with direct involvement from the Molteni family, particularly on the more complicated projects. “Whenever we receive an enquiry, there is always someone from the family looking at stuff. Sharing it with the designers.”

Sometimes this feedback turns into new iterations of its more iconic designs.

Sustainable approach

Molteni&C is a sustainable business in that the products it designs and builds are meant to not only last for decades but feel iconic and on-trend, says Podestà. The time and money that go into these kitchens and closet systems does not fit with a rip-out and replace philosophy.

He says there’s a focus on natural materials — like wood and natural stone — and Molteni&C tries to modify them as little as possible. “We want people to be aware of their natural beauty.”

The factory where Molteni&C’s home office products are made has also been designed with solar panels, which produce 80 per cent of the factory’s electricity needs. So sustainability is front of mind for them. “When we talk about Molteni, we’re talking about the history of design,” says Podestà.

Molteni&C and the history of Italian design are one, says Podestà. They set up a museum years ago to showcase the work of renowned Italian designers.

“We have a comprehensive museum and host events for schools and press,” he says. This museum presents the history of design in Italy, with original pieces from the likes of Gio Ponti and Luca Meda.

“It’s all kinds of designers we’ve worked with throughout the years. These designers are living history with us,” he says.
